I recently had the honor of representing our Power Speakers club in the 2012 Area Speech contest.
I was very nervous before the contest. I was concerned that I would let my club down and look foolish up against more experienced speakers. Being a relatively new member I really didn’t feel I had the right to be there. Well my fears were unfounded. Although there were a number of accomplished speakers both competing and attending the affair I was treated by all as an equal and made very comfortable. The experience was extremely rewarding. It has boosted my confidence as a speaker immensely. Winning the table topics and placing second in the humorous speech contest was nice but it was no where near as important as the experience of participating. The experience starts long before the day of the contest at the club level. My fellow Power Speakers supported me all along the way giving me constructive advice, excellent evaluations, and moral support. I don’t think of this as a contest any longer. I now look at it as a tremendous opportunity to learn and improve my speaking capabilities. If you really want to boost your public speaking skills I strongly recommend you compete in these contests regardless of where you feel your level of competency is. I hope you will join me in the competition next year. Don’t miss out on this opportunity. One more thing; it’s a heck of a lot of fun. Blog written by: Paul G.
